All About Z Bar Hanging System Article

Z bar bracket is a secure hanging solution, designed to hang anything from small lightweight to heavy over-sized objects. These are most commonly used for a wide range of commercial and residential applications. Ranging from re-organizing space to mounting wall displays such as picture frames or shelving. Perfect for transforming work-space. Z bars can be used in pairs or individually. For instance, one cleat mounted to the wall and a matching edge cut straight into the object. The interlocking design of the two cleats helps to temporarily lock the frame in a secure position.

How to order?
French Cleats are available in two types of materials, such as Metal and Wood. The installation takes a few simple steps. Our goal is to have one cleat attached to the picture or an object. While the other piece is attached to the wall. Here we will explore common application and use case scenarios Locate, Qty, Price, and Order

  Metal vs Wooden French Cleats

French Cleats are available in two types of materials, such as Metal and Wood. Compared to Wooden Cleats, Metal Cleats are more expensive. From the distance from the wall, the depth of the Metal Cleats are comparably less to Wooden Cleats. Metal Cleats are made from heavy-duty and extruded aluminum. Which makes it an ideal material that is durable and resistant from wrapping. Metal Cleats are preferably used for both indoor and outdoor applications, and it can naturally resist rust. When Mounted to the wall, Metal Cleats are hidden from sight due to its thin nature compared to thick Wooden Cleats. Traditionally, Wooden Cleats are more natural compared to Metal Cleats, and are most commonly used for cabinets or wooden subjects.

Metal

Aluminum Z Bars are available in two types and come with predefined holes. Regular are most commonly used for small-lightweight pictures. While Heavy Duty is used for large and heavy objects. Each Regular Z Bar is 28 mm tall and 1.5 mm depth. When paired Regular can hold under 90 pounds. While each Heavy Duty is 32 mm tall and 3 mm depth. When paired Heavy Duty can hold over 90 pounds. Z Bar hanging systems are known for achieving flush style hanging solutions. These are made from 100 percent extruded aluminum. For easy stud positioning, it comes with multiple 3/16 inch holes every 2 inches. For maximum strength and weight distribution, secure all premade holes with screws. These can be cut to size with a hand saw or using a power saw. For these, the maximum size that we offer is 59 inches.

Benefits: Drawbacks:
  • Lightweight yet sturdy
  • Compatible for indoor and outdoor applications.
  • Comes with predefined holes for installation
  • In side-view, metal cleats are hidden due to 3/16 inch thickness compared to wooden french cleats.
  • Protects against fire and moisture.
  • Can be custom cut into any size.
  • Resistant to rust and corrosion.
  • Resistant to wrapping.
  • Uninstalling will damage the wall or surface.
  • More expensive compared to wooden cleats.
  • Overtime, aluminum oxidizes. Especially when exposed to water, the surface is affected. A layer of aluminum oxide is formed. However, the underlying metal is protected due to the oxide layer that resistant further corrosion.

Wooden

Similar to Aluminum Z Bar, the Wooden Cleats are perfect for large and heavy displays. A strip of wood is cut in 30 to 45 degree angle, which creates a locking mechanism. For Wooden Cleats the maximum size that we offer is 96 inches.

Benefits: Drawbacks:
  • Can with hold a considerable amount of weight.
  • Lightweight yet sturdy
  • Can be custom cut into any size.
  • The downside of wooden cleats is that, for small artwork, the 1/2 inch thickness can be seen in the side-view. While it is less noticeable for large and heavy artwork.
  • Uninstalling will damage the wall or surface.
  • No reference screw holes for installation.

 How to hang? (Step-by-Step Instructions)

The installation takes a few simple steps. Our goal is to have one cleat attached to the picture or an object. While the other piece is attached to the wall. Brackets can either be used vertically or horizontally with considerations. Z Bars are secured with screws. The interlocking mechanism allows the object to lock into position.

To determine the length of the Z bar, it can be the length of the object or it can be slightly shorter than the object, this allows space to adjust.

Step 1: Setup your Z bar layout

With a pencil, mark a reference line on the wall. Use a ruler, or if you have a laser level, use it to draw a straight line along the wall. Either mark from ceiling downwards or floor upwards to create the reference point. When installed the brackets will be hidden, so it does not matter where it is drilled; thus the cleats can be screwed into the wall separately from the frame. It is important to attach the Z bars in the right direction. The flat side is attached to the wall with a 45 degree angle on one end facing upwards. The other Z bar is attached to the picture frame being clipped upside down. Creating a slide/locking effect.

Step 2: Mount the Z bar to the wall

For metal, follow reference screw holes. For wooden, based on the length of the bar mark screw holes across the surface.

Step 3: Mount the other Z bar to the frame

Mark a reference line and attach the other Z bar to the back of the frame. Remember the flat side is attached to the frame and the shape is installed upside down.

Step 4: Slip into position

Finally, place the frame slightly above the wall mount, and slide the frame into position.
